Pablo Hernández has steered CD Castellón from early-season peril to the threshold of a promotion play-off. Thirty-six league matches on from his appointment, they enter the final day with a genuine chance.

El Periódico Mediterráneo notes that after five matches Castellón were 20th, winless, with two points from 15. Johan Plat was dismissed, and president Bob Voulgaris turned to B-team coach Pablo Hernández, initially interim then confirmed.

The mood around SkyFi Castalia has shifted from September's anxiety to optimism. Early on he set about convincing his players of their quality, and months later the city is enthralled as they stand within reach of a play-off to return to Primera División, last visited in 1991.

Speaking inside the stadium, he expressed pride in the work delivered and in giving supporters a season to enjoy in Segunda. The team have spent some weeks in the automatic places and more than 20 in the play-off spots, while imposing their style at Riazor, Málaga and at home to Almería.

Hernández said the collective effort of players, staff and club is paying off, and that the ideal finish would be to seal a play-off berth. The decisive match against SD Eibar is on Sunday at 18.30, at SkyFi Castalia.
