Crystal Palace pulled off a stunning late victory over Premier League champions Liverpool at Selhurst Park, with Eddie Nketiah coming off the bench to score a stoppage-time winner.
The hosts started on the front foot and were rewarded early. A corner in the opening 10 minutes caused chaos in Liverpool’s box, with Ryan Gravenberch inadvertently directing the ball into his own area amid a tussle with Marc Guehi, allowing Ismaila Sarr to poke Palace ahead.
The Merseysiders struggled to cope with Palace’s energy and were indebted to goalkeeper Alisson, who kept them in the game with a string of fine saves.
A medical incident in the crowd temporarily halted play for six minutes, and upon resumption, Palace keeper Dean Henderson kept his side in the lead, producing a remarkable reaction stop to turn Gravenberch’s goal-bound strike onto the post.
The Brazilian goalkeeper continued to impress with further saves, while Jean-Philippe Mateta rattled the crossbar with a thunderous long-range effort, keeping the hosts on edge.
Liverpool’s frustration grew, though they managed to fashion a few chances after the interval, including a wasted opportunity from Florian Wirtz.
Palace appeared to have a chance to put the game beyond reach when Nketiah missed a golden opportunity with ten minutes to go, only for Liverpool to respond. Federico Chiesa’s 87th-minute goal looked to have earned the visitors a point, giving hope to the champions after a largely shaky display.
But the drama was not over. In the 97th minute, Nketiah capitalised on a long throw to fire Palace back in front, completing a memorable win and sending the Selhurst Park crowd wild.
The win extends Palace’s unbeaten run to 18 matches in all competitions and ends Liverpool’s perfect start to the season.
