Liverpool Eye Marc Guehi as Crystal Palace Faces Key Decision

With just over a week remaining in the summer transfer window, Liverpool’s recruitment strategy is under scrutiny. Two names dominate conversations at Anfield: Alexander Isak and Marc Guehi. While the hunt for attacking reinforcements appears urgent, the pursuit of Guehi carries its own intrigue, shaped by Crystal Palace’s internal dynamics and looming deadlines.

Pressure Mounts at Crystal Palace

For Palace, Marc Guehi is central to both their defensive structure and their ambitions in Europe. His future, however, has become the subject of heated debate behind the scenes. Manager Oliver Glasner voiced his concerns with refreshing honesty this week.

“If Marc leaves, maybe I will try my boots because I was a center-back,” Glasner said. “We have to act. It’s Crystal Palace’s future and we need to add numbers.”

The situation became more complex following the £67 million departure of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal. Losing another cornerstone would expose Palace’s vulnerabilities ahead of their Conference League challenge. Glasner made his stance clear.

“I just know if Marc leaves and is not available for Frederikstad, we will have big troubles,” he added. “That’s pretty clear. We can’t register anyone. So from my side, he has to stay.”

Balancing Ambition and Financial Reality

Keeping Guehi would strengthen Palace’s European hopes and allow the England defender to showcase his talent on the continental stage. Yet, the reality of his contract situation is unavoidable. With his deal running down, the club faces the risk of losing him for nothing next summer.

CEO Steve Parish acknowledged the dilemma.

“For players of that calibre to leave on a free, it’s a problem for us, unfortunately,” Parish admitted. “Joachim [Andersen] went [to Fulham last summer] and we couldn’t afford to lose both. It needs a new contract or a conclusion of some kind.”

The question is whether a compromise can be struck before the deadline.

Liverpool’s Calculated Approach

For Liverpool, Guehi represents an opportunity rather than a necessity. The Premier League champions have already secured Giovanni Leoni from Parma, easing the pressure to secure another centre-back. For Arne Slot, the focus remains on attacking depth, but Guehi’s name lingers on the list.

Any deal would depend on valuation. A fee in the region of £30 million could tempt Liverpool to act, but overspending is unlikely, particularly with the player available for free next summer. Patience could be rewarded, especially as Palace’s bargaining position weakens closer to September 1, once their European qualifiers conclude.

Just like the Isak situation, this feels like a waiting game. Liverpool can afford to hold their ground. For Crystal Palace, the stakes are considerably higher.
