Pany Varela left an enigmatic message on social media after Benfica lifted the Taça da Liga, posting alongside a photo of himself with the trophy.

The player said in a post that the difference lies with the person rather than the place. The image showed him holding the Taça da Liga trophy, which marked the 37th title of his career.

Without naming anyone, the note could be read as a veiled dig at Sporting, the club he represented for eight seasons before departing European futsal to join Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

He returned in summer 2025 to sign for Benfica, a move that did not go down well with many Sporting supporters who had considered him one of the club’s most high-profile futsal figures of the 21st century.

The triumph was marked across the club, and president Rui Costa sent his congratulations in an official note as Benfica celebrated a fifth Taça da Liga.
