Flamengo are racing to have Lucas Paquetá available against Corinthians in Brasília in the Supercopa do Brasil on Sunday, after his arrival in Rio to sign a five-year contract.
According to Globo.com, the midfielder completed medicals at a hospital, then went to Ninho do Urubu for final tests, where he met José Boto and Filipe Luís. The club are waiting for his registration to be approved in the CBF’s BID by 18:00 on Friday, which would make him eligible.
He is due to train with the squad for the first time on Friday. Paquetá last played on six January in West Ham’s Premier League defeat, then dealt with back pain and chose not to play or train while his move was unresolved.
Flamengo view the main hurdle to involving him on Sunday as legal. Any use would also hinge on Filipe Luís, who has two sessions to assess his condition.
If cleared, the plan is for him to get at least a few minutes against Corinthians, mirroring Danilo’s introduction last year. Danilo was announced on 29 January and featured late on in the Supercopa against Botafogo on two February.
Flamengo face Corinthians at 16:00 on Sunday at Mané Garrincha. If paperwork is not finalised in time, Paquetá’s debut would come against Internacional on Wednesday at the Maracanã.
