Manchester United claimed a 1-0 home victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League on Friday.

United started the game on the front foot, with Patrick Dorgu creating a good opening for Benjamin Sesko, but he fluffed the chance.

They broke the deadlock after 23 minutes, as Dorgu fired home a volley for his first Premier League goal.

The Denmark international was presented with another chance to double United’s lead, but goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale denied him.

Newcastle bossed possession late in the half, but United goalie Senne Lammens was untested before the break.

Teenager Jack Fletcher replaced Mason Mount for the home side at half-time.

The Magpies started the second half on the front foot and nearly scored when the ball dropped to Fabian Schar at the back post, but his effort was deflected behind for a corner.

Sesko hit the frame of the goal at the other end, before Lewis Hall did the same for the visitors.

Anthony Gordon managed to squeeze a shot away from an acute angle, but his effort went wide.

Diogo Dalot squandered a big chance to add to United’s tally, running behind the visitors’ defence to set himself up one-on-one with Ramsdale, but he blazed the ball over.

Gordon had another opportunity go begging, but smashed his shot wide.

Newcastle cranked up the pressure, but United held on to secure the victory.

United have climbed up to fifth in the standings, level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea.
