Spain defender Pau Cubarsi, 19, was named FIFA’s Best Young Player shortly after Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in New York to win their second World Cup title.

The Barcelona defender, capped 20 times, played all eight of Spain’s games and formed a tight pairing with Aymeric Laporte.

He follows Paul Pogba in 2014, Kylian Mbappé in 2018 and Enzo Fernandez in 2022 as winners of the award.

Across the tournament, only Belgium’s Charles De Ketelaere breached Spain’s defence, in a quarter-final that finished 2-1.

Organisers also recognised Unai Simon as the best goalkeeper and Rodri as the best player, completing Spain’s sweep of the awards.
