The Man Utd legend is a big fan of the Newcastle midfielder
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes appears to have given his seal of approval for the potential signing of Sandro Tonali.
According to recent reports, Man United have added the Newcastle midfielder to their shortlist ahead of the summer transfer window.
However, the Telegraph do state that while Tonali is high on the list of midfielders being considered at the club, they are likely to face strong competition for the Italy international's signature amid links to Arsenal and Manchester City.
Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace are also thought to be under consideration by Man Utd in their bid to plug the gap that will be left by Casemiro when his contract expires in June.
Scholes, though, has seemingly made it clear who his preferred signing would be.
In an Instagram post which has since been deleted, the former Man United midfielder praised Tonali and, bizarrely, took a swipe at Michael Carrick following the Red Devils’ 2-1 loss to Newcastle on Wednesday night.
He wrote: "Michael has definitely got something special about him...cos Utd have been c*** last four games...night."
Underneath the post, Scholes wrote “Tonali” alongside a love-heart emoji.
This is not the first time Scholes has confessed his admiration for Tonali. Speaking on The Overlap in October, he labelled the Italian as the best midfielder in the Premier League.
"I think he’s better than [Declan] Rice," he said. "I really like Rice, don’t get me wrong, I think he’s got everything.
“Sometimes he takes a few too many touches of the ball and tries to look a bit more stylish than necessary.
“He can do everything, but I just don’t think he does it enough. I prefer Tonali."
