Paul Wanner has confirmed he will represent Austria at international level.
“This decision was probably the hardest of my career. Because through my parents, my upbringing and the stages of my career, I truly have two hearts in my chest. I feel incredibly honoured that two associations tried to convince me to play for their national team.” He told Sky.
There had been persistent talk of a switch and he even declined a Germany call-up from Julian Nagelsmann in November 2024. Until now, he had not fully ruled out playing for Germany.
Born in Austria and raised in Germany, Wanner came through Bayern Munich’s academy. In January 2022 he became Bayern’s youngest Bundesliga debutant.
He enjoyed loans in the Bundesliga and second tier with SV Elversberg and 1. FC Heidenheim. Bayern sold him to PSV Eindhoven last summer for a reported €15 million, and he has since become a regular under Peter Bosz.
Ralf Rangnick has led Austria to their first World Cup since 1998, staged in North America this summer.
“The FIFA World Cup is a dream for every player. But like any other player, I have to earn a nomination. I’ll give everything in every match to achieve that.”
