Vangelis Pavlidis converted his 10th penalty of the season for Benfica, yet the strike could not help them reach the Allianz Cup final in defeat to Braga.
In the 64th minute, the No 14 scored from the spot to join a select group with 10 or more penalties in a single Benfica season, alongside Ángel Di María and Óscar 'Tacuara' Cardozo. According to Playmaker, he sits fifth on that list, behind Di María, Cardozo and João Mário, now at AEK.
The record remains Eusébio’s, 14 converted penalties in 1966/67.
After the final whistle, the Greece international assessed what had unfolded.
This season Pavlidis, valued at 35 million euros, has played 32 matches for Benfica, 17 in Liga Portugal Betclic, 10 in the Champions League, two in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Taça da Liga and one in the Supertaça. Across 2,279 minutes, he has 20 goals and two assists.
