Tanzania’s reigning champions Young Africans SC (Yanga) are officially unveiling Pedro Valdemar Soares Goncalves as their new head coach.

The 49 year old Portuguese tactician succeeds Romain Folz who parted ways with the club earlier this month.

From Luanda to Jangwani

Goncalves arrives in Dar es Salaam with rich resume. Between 2019 and 2025, he manages the Angola national team earning praise for his attacking style and success in developing local talent.

Under his guidance, Angola reach the AFCON 2023 quarter finals, record famous 1-0 away win over Ghana and capture the 2024 COSAFA Cup with 5-0 victory over Namibia , their biggest final stage win in history.

Before moving to Africa, Goncalves spends more than decade at Sporting CP’s academy helping nurture generation of Portuguese prospects.

Yanga’s expectations

Club officials confirm that his 1st mission is to guide Yanga through the CAF Champions League group stage after they booked their place with 2-0 win over Silver Strikers (Malawi) at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium earlier tonight.

He is also tasked with maintaining the club’s domestic dominance in the Tanzanian Premier Leagu where Yanga have claimed back to back titles.

Goncalves is joined by fellow Portuguese assistant Filipe Pedro both expected to strengthen Yanga’s tactical structure and player development.

Known for his possession based, one touch style, Goncalves emphasises quick transitions and technical precision , a philosophy Tanzanian fans already witnessed when his Angola sides faced Ghana & Lesotho.
