FIFA is set to shake up one of the most iconic moments in modern football: penalties.
Soon, it may no longer be possible to score on a rebound after a penalty kick. If a player misses the shot, play would resume with a goal kick from the goalkeeper. Players would have only one attempt, and their teammates would no longer wait in the box hoping for a second-chance rebound.
However, it's still unclear what would happen if the ball rebounds off the post or crossbar without the goalkeeper touching it. According to former Spanish referee Eduardo Iturralde on the radio station “Cadena SER”, FIFA’s head of refereeing, Pierluigi Collina, is a major advocate for this revolution and is determined to implement the change. This reform could simplify referees’ work and give goalkeepers an edge, but some questions remain unresolved, such as what happens with rebounds off the post or bar.
