A new report has outlined a funny interaction between Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and Norwegian winger Oscar Bobb upon the latter’s tour of the club’s first-team facilities before him joining in 2019.
Bobb has made a promising start to the 2025-26 campaign – much unlike City – with three starts in his side’s opening three Premier League games – which have seen the Blues lose twice against Tottenham and Brighton.
The 22-year-old starred in Manchester City’s opening day rout of Wolves, setting up summer signing Tijjani Reijnders for his first Premier League goal in the first-half. Bobb was also involved in City’s third, linking well with Reijnders on the right wing to set up Erling Haaland’s second strike at the Molineux Stadium.
This feels like a make-or-break season for Bobb, who burst onto the first-team scene with a crucial injury-time winner against Newcastle in January 2024, handing Manchester City a monumental three points in a game that also witnessed the return of Kevin De Bruyne from a hamstring injury.
Having impressed in pre-season, Bobb has been handed the keys to Manchester City’s right-wing by Guardiola as the Norway international aims to stamp his imprint on the Blues’ attack after a transfer window that witnessed a major revamp of the first-team squad.
Bobb is arguably only competing with Savinho for the right-wing position this season, with the young winger not getting ahead of himself and taking each game as it comes as he looks upon a crucial run of games for Manchester City against Manchester United, Napoli and Arsenal.
City were considering a big-money swoop for Real Madrid’s Rodrgyo in the final weeks of the summer transfer window amidst Tottenham’s interest in Savinho, who has ended up staying into his second season at the Etihad Stadium.
There has arguably never been a better chance for a young academy graduate to make a first-team spot his own in attack for Manchester City and Bobb will know that he needs to stay fit and convince Guardiola and those above him that he can be trusted to take his boyhood club back to the Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles.
A new report from Jordan Campbell of The Athletic has detailed a funny encounter between Bobb and Guardiola when the former was invited to the Etihad Stadium to tour Manchester City’s facilities first in 2019.
In an accidental encounter with Bobb on the steps to the Manchester City first-team dressing room, Guardiola jokingly told the forward that he would benefit from borrowing some of Bobb’s hair, providing a peak through the curtain into Guardiola’s humorous, easy-going demeanour towards impressionable young talents.
Just under six years on from that encounter at the Etihad Stadium – when Manchester City played Tottenham – Bobb is a member of the first-team squad and the Scandinavian attacker will have full knowledge that this season is his chance to prove his talents on the pitch.
The report adds that Guardiola is fond of Bobb, whose ability to absord information and follow intricate instructions handed by the Manchester City manager to his wide attackers has left a strong impression on the Catalan coach, who is likely to start the City academy graduate against Manchester United on Sunday.
