Willy Gnonto could yet work under Pep Guardiola, with Sky Sports in Italy reporting that the Italian federation has held talks in Barcelona with the former Manchester City manager over the national team job. Any agreement remains unclear.

The Leeds United forward, 22, has not featured for Italy since the month after Leeds were relegated in 2023, and he has been in and out under Daniel Farke.

Only four of his 23 Premier League outings last season were starts. Italy’s failure to reach the 2026 World Cup ended any lingering tournament chance and Gennaro Gattuso departed in April after 10 months in charge.

Gnonto impressed in his first Leeds campaign, scoring against West Ham and Manchester United, and he caught Gary Neville’s eye during a 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa in January 2023. Neville said the youngster looked suited to Manchester City’s style and praised his mature decision-making.

For any international recall, regular club minutes must come first, though a summons under Guardiola would be a notable opportunity. His Elland Road future is uncertain beyond this summer, and as a £3.8million signing in 2022 he is among fringe players who could generate profit. He may also feel a move is required to secure consistent game time.
