Pepe Basualdo says he rejected Riquelme's offer to manage Boca youth | OneFootball

Pepe Basualdo has revealed he was approached by Juan Román Riquelme to take charge of a Boca youth side.

"At the start I had an offer from Román for a team in the youth divisions. Between the financial side and what he was offering, I obviously did not accept. I thanked him anyway, but it was down to the finances and where he wanted me to coach in the academy," he told Planeta Boca.

"I had already been managing top-flight teams for 17 years, so I am not saying the first team, but we could have been close. It did not happen, he chose other people and that is fine. I just thanked him for the offer and for having me in mind, or at least for asking me."

Riquelme has built a backroom team in the academy made up of former players, including Clemente Rodriguez, Pablo Ledesma, Antonio Barijho, Silvio Rudman, Walter Pico and Daniel Díaz.

Basualdo was considered despite backing the opposition and being aligned with macrismo. Riquelme also looked past politics with others, adding Chipi even though he supported Gribaudo.
