Serie A witnessed a rather dramatic gameweek 37 today and it low-key altered pretty much how the European spots in the league look.
Juventus lost to Fiorentina, dropping out of the Champions League spots. This allowed Roma’s 2-0 win over Lazio to lift them into fourth. Napoli won against Pisa and sealed a spot in the Champions League, with Milan now at third after the win over Genoa. Como did beat Parma and this allows them to be level on points with Juventus, while being at fifth due to a better head-to-head record.
This doesn’t mean that things are done and dusted, with one game each yet to be played.
Juve and Como are tied at 68 points and at sixth and fifth respectively. Even if Juve beat Torino and Como beat Cremonese, they will have to rely on Milan or Roma dropping points to get into the top four.
It should be noted that if all four teams end at 71 points next week and this is very much possible, Como and Milan will qualify for the Champions League due to their head-to-head records.
Milan take on Cagliari and are two clear of Como and Juve. A draw can potentially take them into the top four because of their superior record against Como and the fact that their two games against Juve ended 0-0.
Roma take on Verona and a win will help them finish in the top four. They haven’t beaten Juve this season and tying up on points with them will make them move into fifth – or sixth.
To sum it up, the matter is now out of the hands of Juve and Como. They will rely heavily on Milan and Roma to lose against lesser opposition to boost their hopes of qualification.
