Clark was a key part of Sunderland’s 1998-99 promotion, when they amassed 105 points to reach the Premier League. His Sunderland spell ended after the Wembley T-shirt controversy linked to Newcastle United, a move Reid says devastated him.

Reid said there was no falling out and called Clark a fantastic, straight footballer with huge desire. He expects fans to see that passion, noting Clark lives locally and knows the demands.

He recalled being gutted to sell Clark to Paul Bracewell’s Fulham and highlighted a strong spell at Huddersfield Town that gave fans memories. He also noted family links to Pools through brother-in-law Paul Baker, captain in the 1990-91 promotion.

Reid praised Clark’s work with his son Bobby, who impressed on loan at Derby County, and said interest in the youngster is high. He added it would be brilliant to see Hartlepool back in the league under their new owner, recalling the strong backing they enjoy.

Clark played for Newcastle, Sunderland and Fulham, and has managed Blackpool, Kilmarnock, Bury and Blyth Spartans, plus spells in Sudan and Oman. Former captain Gary Liddle stays on the first-team staff and Chris Beech is head of recruitment.
