Manchester United had a disastrous last season, finishing 15th and losing the Europa League final, and club legend Peter Schmeichel is expecting a lot better next term.

Ruben Amorim came into the fold in November but struggled to improve the situation in Manchester. In fact the team got significantly worse over the duration of the season.

Speaking ahead of Soccer Aid, Schmeichel said: “It’s not been a great year and it’s painful to say that. Normally I’d be more neutral and candid about it but 15th in the Premier League isn’t great. That’s not Manchester United.

“A lot of things have happened at the club in the last two years and not a lot of good things. All of that needs to stop. It takes a lot of time to make that change. My hope is that we make all the changes at once. Because once we’ve done it then we can move forwards.”

The situation appeared dire last year, but United have made a strong start to the summer and are set to continue spending in the transfer market. And the former goalkeeper is enthused by United’s business: “With Cunha signed and a couple other players in the pipeline it looks promising. I’m thinking Ruben can start to build his team… I’m hoping for a lot better next year.”

The forgettable season was capped by a terrible night in Bilbao, and Schmeichel reinforced just how disappointing it was: “It’s painful not to be in Europe, it was painful to watch that game in Bilbao. It was probably the worst experience I’ve had for a long time. All of that is painful.

“But the way we were built at United, the way we were trained to be is that you have a bad situation but you have to flip it. There is something positive and you have to cling on. With no Europe we have time to build. We can spend time on the training pitch and give players time off so we have less injuries.

“We can start building now but we only want to do that for one year. We’ve got to see some progress. We’ve got to see a big jump in the table.”
