Phil Foden says winning is the only thing on Manchester City’s mind ahead of the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup.
Pep Guardiola’s side arrived in Miami ahead of their first match against Moroccan side Wydad AC on Wednesday 18 June, with the Citizens having a host of new signings at their disposal after the arrivals of Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Ait-Nouri.
Foden, who had a season to forget after his Player of the Year campaign in the 2023/24 season, is looking forward to getting underway at the tournament and competing against the best the world have to offer.
“Very excited,” Foden said. “Obviously, it’s the best of the best teams all around the world. It’s going to be something new for us that we have not experienced before but it’s really good to have this competition, I think, to even get ready for this season.
“It’s like a great warm-up for this season and hopefully, we can compete against the best teams and try and win it.
“I’m sure it’s going to be entertaining for the fans to see all different teams – maybe teams that they have not really watched before and I’m pretty sure there will be players that people have not heard of that are going to shine.
“But I’m looking forward to meeting new teams and seeing what they are about. Everyone has their own style and that’s what they believe in, so I’m just looking forward to the challenge.”
The 25-year-old also says there have been discussions within the City camp about becoming the first winners of the competition, and believes his side have enough quality to do just that.
“Speaking to a few of the lads, we’ve spoken about that – being the first on the trophy would be nice.
“So, that’s definitely the aim and, with the players that we have and the quality that we have in the team, I am pretty sure we’re more than capable of doing that.”
