Sunderland resumed their Premier League campaign at Bournemouth on Saturday lunchtime and the game finished level after an early breakthrough.

Eliezer Mayenda put the Black Cats ahead before the interval, then Evanilson struck in the second half to secure a share of the spoils for the hosts. According to Sunderland Echo, these were the player ratings.

Robin Roefs, goalkeeper, produced several sharp saves and coped well with a stream of set pieces, but his failure to reach the cross converted by Evanilson proved costly. Rated six.

Lutsharel Geertruida, right-back, was tidy in possession and defended with authority, though he could not close down Tavernier’s delivery for the equaliser. Selection vindicated. Rated six.

Dan Ballard, centre-back, was excellent again, assured on the ball and involved in the build-up to the opener. Defended stoutly with key interventions, a top defender. Rated eight.

Omar Alderete, centre-back, delivered his best Sunderland display in some time, winning headers and competing strongly. He could not get up high enough to prevent Evanilson scoring after the break. Rated seven.
