For years, the national media, supposedly 'knowledgeable' pundits like Lee Dixon, and rival fans have looked for any excuse to slaughter Jordan Pickford. They dissect his arm length, say he's not tall enough to be a goalkeeper in the modern game, obsess over his shouting, and hyper-analyze every goal he concedes.

But last night, in the brutal, suffocating cauldron of the Estadio Azteca, the Blues’ Number 1 produced a definitive, world-class performance to silence the critics once and for all.

Faced with a hostile crowd, high altitude, and a rampant tournament co-host, England clawed their way to a historic 3-2 victory over Mexico to advance to the World Cup Quarter-Finals. While Jude Bellingham will rightfully grab the headlines for his superb first-half double, let’s be entirely clear: England do not survive that second-half siege without Jordan Pickford.

The Catalyst and the Wall: Key Match Moments

Pickford wasn't just a shot-stopper last night; he was the tactical anchor and the emotional heartbeat of Thomas Tuchel's side when everything threatened to unravel:

  1. 15' — The Tone Setter: Mexico started like a whirlwind, fueled by a partisan crowd. When Raúl Jiménez directed a powerful, goal-bound diving header toward the bottom corner, Pickford reacted instantly, getting down brilliantly to his left to turn it away with a stunning one-handed stop.
  2. 36' — Brave Claim, Deadly Counter: People consistently undervalue Pickford's distribution and box command. Under immense pressure, he commanded his area to bravely claim a dangerous Mexican cross. Instead of wasting time, he immediately spun and rolled a perfect ball to Declan Rice. Seconds later, Bukayo Saka crossed for Bellingham's opener. It was a world-class sequence sparked entirely by our keeper's vision.
  3. 45+1' — Acrobatic Defiance: Right before the break, with Mexico rallying after halving the deficit, Jiménez struck again with a brilliant, flicked header destined for the top-left corner. Pickford took flight, acrobatically tipping it over the bar to preserve England's lead at a crucial psychological juncture.
  4. The Final Siege (53' – 101'): After Jarell Quansah’s red card left England down to 10 men, and Jiménez converted a penalty to make it 3-2, Mexico launched an absolute onslaught. Through a grueling final half-hour and an agonizing 11 minutes of added time, Pickford was a titan. He came out into a crowded 6-yard box time and again to punch, claim, and completely sap the momentum out of the Mexican wave.

By The Numbers: Pickford vs Mexico

The Verdict: England's Undisputed No 1

There was absolutely nothing he could do about Julián Quiñones’ close-range rocket or Jiménez's clinical penalty. What he could control, he mastered entirely. When the going got tough and England were reduced to 10 men in one of the most intimidating stadiums on the planet, Pickford showed the elite, steely mentality we see, week-in & week-out.

Thomas Tuchel’s men now march on to face Erling Haaland’s Norway in the quarter-finals this Saturday, 11 July in Miami. If England are going to go all the way and end 60 years of hurt, they will need their Evertonian brick wall at his absolute best.

Keep shining, Jordan. The country is finally seeing what the Blue half of Merseyside has known for nearly a decade.

Jordan beamed on his post match interview, bet hes still smiling now! Nice one Picks!

Andrew Ellams 3 Posted 06/07/2026 at 09:27:38

Michael, Jordan Henderson. He fell over an advertising board during the post match celebrations and was taken away on a stretcher. He's currently in hospital.

John Collins 4 Posted 06/07/2026 at 09:28:04

Henderson broke his wrist trying to jump over the hoardings.

Luckily it won't affect his jokes to keep the squad in high spirits.

Alan McGuffog 5 Posted 06/07/2026 at 09:33:16

BBC begrudging in its praise. Says his form has been "skittish" (whatever that means) and rehashed that he was at fault for the goal against DR Congo. How dare he let a goal in! They really despise clubs like Everton. Were he to play for Spurs or Arsenal, they'd be cheering him to the rafters.

Paul Griffiths 6 Posted 06/07/2026 at 10:06:10

MK where were you during the match again? Waiting for Mexico to draw level or go ahead?

Mike Powell 7 Posted 06/07/2026 at 10:10:03

Lee Dixon will be gutted, that Pickford had a great game, I bet he doesn't mention it, he will be waiting for him to make a mistake, then go in two footed on him, can't stand Dixon the little runt, always turn sound down if he is on

Jeff Spiers 8 Posted 06/07/2026 at 10:11:53

F..k the BBC

Jim Bennings 9 Posted 06/07/2026 at 10:14:44

That was a bad one for Henderson, that type of injury can happen anywhere at home, work etc. Nothing funny about that at all.

Jimmy Salt 10 Posted 06/07/2026 at 10:19:51

Brilliant to see Pickford so commanding in the second half. I don't think I have seen him come out and punch to clear the lines so much before. More of the same next season please Jordan.

John Chambers 11 Posted 06/07/2026 at 10:24:17

I think Pickford has been brilliant foe Everton but can we play that version of him, coming off his line and dealing with crosses

John Collins 12 Posted 06/07/2026 at 10:24:54

True Jim.

My point is he should not have been in the squad in the first place.

Jimmy Salt 13 Posted 06/07/2026 at 10:25:03

I must be on the naughty step.

Paul Griffiths 15 Posted 06/07/2026 at 10:27:46

Except he shouldn't have been there in the first place Jim - Palmer, Foden, Garner etc.

I hate the gobshite and if his pathetic hurdle over the boards means that he is not available then all well and good.

But hey the piece of poison shite can still keep his main role in being boss in the dressing. room and saying 'great Ricey and Bellers' on the training pitch.

What a prick.

How can England beat Norway without Hendo Jim?

The worst pick for a World Cup squad since was it Walcott with the fella who fucked Ulrika in every imaginable position?

Tony Abrahams 16 Posted 06/07/2026 at 10:43:17

In words borrowed from Roy Keane, Pickford, just did what he was supposed to do, he just done his job very well.

The masterclass, was delivered by every single England player who played a part in their great victory, because it was achieved with every single ingredient a team needs if they are going to be successful on the biggest stage.

Heart, spirit, desire, complete determination to overcome adversity, complete togetherness, when they had to roll up their sleeves and keep going, and they also used the ball intelligently to score two very good goals.

I keep saying it but there’s discipline and then there is complete 100% discipline. The first one is all about being organised and hard to beat, the second one is about having the desire “to win at all costs, when the going gets very, very tough”

I’m just glad I got up and watched it, and one of the first things I thought about today was the Evertonians, all over the world, who get up at crazy hours, or just stay awake all night to watch our team play every single week.

Respect to every single one of yers and if you’re ever stuck for a ticket on your travels, then the least I could do is offer you mine👍💙

Mike Powell 17 Posted 06/07/2026 at 10:53:40

Yes Jeff fuck the BBC

Martin Berry 18 Posted 06/07/2026 at 10:55:40

We don't appreciate Pickford enough on this site.

I said on a previous thread that Jordon is the best "all round" keeper at the World Cup. When you take into account his attributes of saves, catches, punching out and kicking, he is the best, I stand by this and he is not done yet as the tournament progresses

Geoff Lambert 19 Posted 06/07/2026 at 11:50:10

Henderson must be the only player in history to get booked and carried off on a stretcher without playing one second of football in the whole tournament.

He will miss using that wrist on a daily basis.

Ian Pilkington 20 Posted 06/07/2026 at 12:07:59

Staying up until 0415 was rewarded with best England performance I can remember. Jordan was world class and rapidly approaching favourable comparison with Banks and Shilton, the two greatest England goalkeepers.

The obnoxious Dixon and childish Mackem-hating Shearer, apart from being useless, boring summarisers have repeatedly shown their ignorance regarding Jordan. It is a mystery to me why summarisers are required in the first place.

Mark Ryan 21 Posted 06/07/2026 at 12:25:42

Pub quiz question:

Which England player was given a yellow card and was stretchered off without playing one minute of the game?

Quite unbelievable!

Raymond Fox 22 Posted 06/07/2026 at 12:27:08

It pads out the broadcast, Ian, and now we have to have multiple commentators on an event giving their continuous babble, I turn the sound off.

While I'm in moaning mode, what gives with all these women presenters on almost every damn programme???

Good one, Geoff.

Mark Ryan 23 Posted 06/07/2026 at 12:58:30

My Dads 94 and he's been turning the sound off since John Motson passed.

Mind you, that comes with a caveat because my Dad loved Rugby League's Eddie Waring, lol!

Eric Myles 24 Posted 06/07/2026 at 14:16:20

Tony #16, welcome to my world for the last 30 odd years, and not only the footy but the F1 and rugby internationals too!

I've cut back a lot in the last couple of years though 'cos the streams are just too dodgy, sticking to reasonable times I can watch in the pub.

Tony Abrahams 25 Posted 06/07/2026 at 14:32:47

I wouldn't mind living in Thailand or Vietnam, Eric, now that it wouldn't bother me as much trying to watch Everton every week, mate!

Alan McGuffog 26 Posted 06/07/2026 at 15:57:58

Thing is Mark he would have missed Danny Murphy telling us about his bleedin' cat

Jack Convery 27 Posted 06/07/2026 at 18:00:25

Not one comment about Kelly Cates outfit.

Annika Herbert 28 Posted 06/07/2026 at 19:30:09

Tony, I now live in the Philippines and still get up to watch as many Everton games as possible. But I do miss being there in person. I am hoping I can get over soon for my first visit to the new stadium.

But I have to admit, generally, with Moyes in charge, the urge to get over isn’t so strong. I have to rely on dodgy streams over here as the locals aren’t known for there footballing fervour. But I am doing my bit to promote Everton at every opportunity.

One of the things that does impress the locals is the passion they see when I show them clips of the Everton supporters in full song.
