Pirlo had been the frontrunner to take over as CT after the confirmation that neither Carlo Ancelotti nor Andrea Pirlo would be joining the project.

However, Pirlo confirmed in a statement on social media that he was informed on Sunday evening that he was no longer in the running to take over as Italy head coach.

Various reports in Italy claim that FIGC President Giovanni Malagò decided against Pirlo’s appointment due to ‘political pressure’.

There have also been suggestions that FIGC technical director Paolo Maldini could resign as a result of the Pirlo mess, just a fortnight after he was appointed.
