UEFA Europa League Matchday, 06/011/25

Lyon’s unbeaten run in the UEFA Europa League came to an end in Sevilla as Betis secured three points with a 2-0 win, thanks to goals from Ez Abde (29) and Antony (35).

The match

Neither team created any clear-cut opportunities in the opening 25 minutes of the match. Lyon enjoyed some early possession, but failed to provide a threat with the ball. The same could be said about Betis before Abde was played in behind after some loose passing in midfield. The Moroccan international’s shot was turned behind the goal by Greif after a good stop. However, from the following corner, he would open the scoring after some poor defending from Tessmann allowed him to turn the ball home with ease.

Just a few minutes later,  Betis almost doubled their lead. Antony was afforded space down the right flank, and he managed to direct an effort goalwards, which went narrowly wide – Lyon began to feel rhetorical pressure for the first time in the Europa League this season. Despite failing with his first effort, the former Manchester United attacker was successful with his second. Antony was played in behind from a deep free kick, which OL defenders failed to judge. The Brazilian was quickest to react and was afforded far too much time and space to loft the ball over Greif to double the Seville outfit’s lead.

Enzo Molebe fired his first effort on goal from distance at the end of the first half, but it failed to trouble Valles between the posts for Betis. The hosts led by two goals at the break.

OL made two changes at the start of the second half, with Nicolás Tagliafico and Alfonso Moreira replacing Enzo Molebe and Abner. Khalis Merah did well to make his way into the Betis penalty area at the start of the second half. However, his curved finish did bend enough to creep inside the post. Lyon dominated the possession in the second half, as Betis were happy to soak up pressure with a two-goal advantage in hand. Nevertheless, Les Gones struggled to break the La Liga outfit down.

Tagliafico assumed an advanced position and almost got Lyon back in the game, but his glancing effort from close range was turned wide. OL huffed and puffed in the second half, looking for a goal, but they were unable to penetrate the Betis backline, and the Spaniards secured all three points.

Lyon player ratings

Dominik Greif – 5

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 5

Ruben Kluivert – 4

Moussa Niakhaté – 4

Abner –  4, 45′ replaced by Nicolas Tagliafico (5)

Mathys De Carvalho -4

Tanner Tessmann – 4

As the senior presence in a young Lyon midfield, the American international failed to make an impact on the game. With weak defending at the near post to allow Ez Abde to score the opening goal, and a series of loose passes in midfield, it was a game to forget for the midfielder.

Khalis Merah – 5

Adam Karabec – 4

Martín Satriano – 3

The Uruguyan international failed to register a shot on goal throughout the match as he led the line. He tried to pick up dangerous positions but became too predictable for the Betis backline and failed to have a real influence on the match.

Enzo Molebe – 4, 45′ replaced by Alfonso Moreira (4)
