According to Anthony Joseph the former Scotland Under 21 captain is the subject of loan offer from English League One side Plymouth Argyle. The reliable Sky Sports reporter notes that Celtic are considering the offer.
Celtic of course have been linked with a loan move of their own. Various reports yesterday pointed to Celtic looking at bringing in Manchester City defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey for a season long loan deal. And it very much looks like Dane Murray is ahead of Welsh in the manager’s thoughts for this season, with Carter-Vickers, Trusty and Scales the leading three contenders for regular starts.
Stephen Welsh spent the second half of last season on loan at Belgian side K.V. Mechelen, who were looking to secure him permanently, although that option seems to have gone rather quiet in recent weeks.

Welsh made 19 appearances for the Belgian outfit since his move in January and clearly enjoyed the regular first team football that was on offer. “I have loved every minute of it,” he said, as reported by Conor Spence on The Celtic Star. “I think it is the best thing I have done, it is almost like a refresh for six months to go and play football at a top level.”
What is clear the 25 year-old defender needs to get first team football and also needs to assess if that is likely to happen for him at Celtic. Hanging around waiting for injuries to open up a few appearances and filling a useful place on Celtic’s homegrown quota for European competition is hardly enough, especially as so many of his peers from that Scotland U21 team are now making real impacts across the continent.

A move to Mechelen would give the Celtic Academy graduate a higher standard of football that playing in League One with Plymouth but essentially for the player himself that’s going to be better than being a bench warmer at best at Celtic.
If Jahmai Simpson-Pusey does come in then that should remove any remain doubt in Welsh’s mind.
He’s a player who loves the club and has always given absolutely everything for Celtic, never letting us down either. So hopefully he gets the move that suits him this summer.
