Porto’s 2025-26 campaign began with a 1-0 victory against Torreense in the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira.

The second division side got off to a fast start in Coimbra, Diogo Costa tipping Javi Vázquez’s free kick wide and collecting a weak shot from Dany Jean.

David Bruno and Luis Quintero were booked in quick succession as Porto got into the contest. The Liga Portugal champions should have scored in the 22nd minute, André Silva making a meal of Alberto Costa's cross when it looked easier to score.

The Dragons missed another glorious opportunity when a fast break resulted in Pepê putting the ball on a plate for William Gomes, the Brazilian missing the target from point blank range.

The breakthrough came in the 38th minute, Pepê's cross picking out Victor Froholdt who headed the ball past Adriel Ramos.

Torreense ended the first half in the ascendancy, Costa denying Léo Azevedo after a scramble in the box.

Both managers had expressed concerns about the pitch before the match and were proven correct, players frequently stumbling on the soft surface which was increasingly resembling a cow paddock.

Jan Bednarek hurt his knee in the first half and didn't come out after the break, Pablo Rosario moving into central defence with Alan Varela coming off the bench.

André Silva’s free kick was tipped over the bar by Adriel but Torreense continued to threaten on the break, speedsters Dany Jean and Musa Drammeh looking most likely to open the door.Rosario was booked for bringing down Drammeh before Francesco Farioli brought on Borja Sainz and Deniz Gül for Gomes and Silva.

The changes kept coming, Luís Tralhão replacing Luis Quintero with Adama Baradji and Farioli introducing Hwang Inbeom for Gabri Veiga.

Karem Zoabi came off the bench and went close to equalising in the 87th minute, firing over the bar under heavy pressure from Varela.

Hwang made a challenge on Jean that could have resulted in a penalty as Porto held on, claiming their 88th title to move one ahead of Benfica.

A word of warning for the Dragons however, no Super Cup winners have gone on to win the Liga in ten years.

Mixed emotions for Costa

Diogo Costa claimed another trophy in his 300th game for Porto, his first since the recent passing of his grandfather. Before the match he said: “My biggest motivation will be to win tomorrow's game to honour him and make him happy, as the great Porto supporter he was.”

The goalkeeper is a vital payer for Francesco Farioli who will be desperate to hold onto his captain.

The manager spoke about Costa before the clash in Coimbra: "I've already made it clear that, for my part, I would love to work with Diogo Costa forever, for the player he is, for the captain he is, and especially for the person he is, for the way he lives his life, both on and off the field.

"There's no doubt about that. And I'm not the only one who felt that way about him. Therefore, his life will go wherever it has to go, and this will always be his home.

"But of course, everyone wants to have Diogo Costa at the club and in the city for as long as possible."
