The football calendar may soon have another competition to accommodate if the president of FC Porto, Andre Villas-Boas, gets his wishes.

Indeed, the former manager, now the chief of FC Porto, has proposed a new competition: the ‘Iberian Super Cup’, which will pit top clubs from Spain and Portugal against each other.

In fact, Villas-Boas even confirmed that he had already held talks with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid in Spain as well as Porto’s rivals Benfica and Sporting CP in Portugal regarding the idea.

“I have discussed the creation of an Iberian Super Cup and I have spoken with Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico and, of course, with the Portuguese clubs, Benfica, Sporting…,” Villas-Boas said at the Portugal Football Summit (h/t Mundo Deportivo).

Villas-Boas further went on to state that the idea of the ‘Iberian Super Cup’ is not something new and that he had already proposed it when he took over as the president of FC Porto.

The former Chelsea coach even claimed that the idea “was very well received” by the clubs and by the Portuguese Football Federation.

Top teams such as Real Madrid and Barcelona are already facing a packed schedule with the existing competitions.

In fact, Los Blancos were involved in as many as seven competitions during the last season – UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Intercontinental Cup, La Liga, Copa del Rey, Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Champions League, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Squeezing in another tournament into an already bloated schedule can be detrimental to the health and welfare of the players, with the after-effects of the workload already reflecting in the sharp rise in number of injuries in recent seasons.
