Porto’s pre-match tribute to Vítor Pereira, now Nottingham Forest head coach, featured Kelvin’s title-winning goal, reviving a painful memory for Benfica supporters.
According to Glorioso 1904, his return to Estádio do Dragão for the Europa League tie with Nottingham Forest included a presentation from André Villas-Boas, who handed the Portuguese a shirt in recognition of his spell in charge.
During the ceremony, a video showcased highlights from Pereira’s era. Among the clips was Kelvin’s strike, scored at 93 minutes against Benfica in 2012/2013, which clinched the league crown. The image of Jorge Jesus on his knees became a lasting emblem of that drama.
The selection of that moment prompted swift reaction because of its sensitivity among Benfica fans. In the context of a homage, some may view the choice as unnecessary or even provocative.
Elsewhere, Benfica women’s defender Lúcia Alves moved to quell talk of a switch to Porto. She said she enjoys playing for Benfica in Portugal, feels happy and fulfilled, and prefers to focus on the present rather than think about the future.
