Ange Postecoglou has fired back at comments from former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger suggesting the Europa League winners should not qualify for the Champions League.

In an interview with BeIN Sports, Wenger, who is now FIFA’s chief of global football development, said: “They [Europa League winners] should qualify automatically for the Europa League again but not necessarily for the Champions League.

“Especially when you’re in the Premier League where already five teams qualify. I think it’s something (for Uefa) to think about and to review.

“On the other hand people will tell you that to keep the Europa League focused, interesting and motivated you need to give them that prize (of qualifying for the Champions League).”

And Postecoglou hit back at the argument, claiming it is again part of the negative noise associated with Tottenham.

“That’s a debate that’s been raging for years mate,” Postecoglou joked.

“At least they last, what, eight days?

“I’ve never heard that before. I’ve said it before, Spurs does crazy things to people. It does. You put that club into any sentence or any issue, and invariably they all come out and try and diminish as much as they can.

“Why wasn’t it an issue before but it’s an issue now? What’s the difference? I don’t understand what the difference is.

“Last year, fifth didn’t get you into Champions League but this year it does. What does that mean? There are competition rules and the rules say the winner goes into it.

“It’s Spurs mate, they love it. You love it!

“I’ve got a great respect for Arsene and he’s one of the legends of the game but it does crazy things to people. I love it. Bring it on!”

Spurs lead 3-1 going into their semi-final second leg of the competition against Bodo/Glimt, but will have to face the Norwegian side without James Maddison and Heung-Min Son because of injury.
