Looking at this Newcastle team v Manchester City.

Eddie Howe and his players looking to build on their ten points from a possible fifteen in the Premier League (plus progress in the Carabao Cup).

Newcastle United of course, also looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season, at Fulham last Saturday.

Victory today would send Newcastle United level on points with Manchester City at the top of the table, ahead of the other Premier League fixtures.

So what can we expect the Newcastle team v Manchester City to be?

As a starting point, this was the Newcastle team v Fulham:

Pope, Trippier, Schar, Burn, Kelly, Joelinton, Bruno, Willock, Barnes, Isak, Gordon

Eddie Howe gave an injury and availability update on Friday morning.

The Head Coach saying none of the long-term injured are ready to come back yet, so Callum Wilson, Jamaal Lascelles, Sven Botman and Lewis Miley are all still unavailable.

Eddie Howe also saying that due to a big flare up of Eczema, Matt Targett hadn’t been able to train this past week, so he won’t be considered for the matchday squad either.

Howe stated as well, that Alexander Isak had actually needed an injection in his toe to be able to play at Fulham. Eddie Howe also revealing that the striker had suffered a small fracture in that toe and hadn’t been able to train this week.

The implication being I think, that Isak would train on Friday and they’d see how he is. Then make a decision on possible involvement against Man City today, with likely another injection if he is to play a part in the game.

A very difficult Newcastle team v Manchester City to predict.

Of those who started at Fulham, only really Harvey Barnes played well throughout the 90 minutes, especially good in the second half.

Nick Pope could do nothing with the very early and late goals, but of course, was very much to blame as that second weak effort somehow squirmed through his hand. However, overall he has been very good this season and has been a key reason as to why Newcastle won four and drew one in their first five matches.

To play in front of him?

I wouldn’t rule out Livramento coming in but I think on balance Trippier will be Howe’s choice.

Whilst in the middle, could Kelly be a surprise choice to add a bit more pace to try and deal with Haaland?

However, I reckon the United boss will stick with Burn alongside Schar again. With maybe Kelly given a try in the middle on Tuesday night.

I don’t think Kelly will stay at left-back. Eddie Howe has swapped between them and after doing decent in the second-half at Fulham, I think Lewis Hall will play today. He can also help United keep the ball a bit better going forward.

Whilst neither played well, I don’t in any way see this one as the match where Eddie Howe leaves out either of his two Brazilians.

He has though admitted that it was probably a mistake to start Joe Willock against Fulham, that he wasn’t really quite ready to play yet in a starting eleven in the Premier League.

Sandro Tonali will surely play today.

Eddie Howe has given him the time to settle back in and I think now he will be physically and mentally ready. He can be massive in the midfield today, where he can also help hopefully spark better performances from Bruno and Joelinton.

As for the attacking trio. My best guess is that especially with this toe issue, Eddie Howe could use Alexander Isak as an impact sub, having the likes of him and Willock to come on with half an hour or so to go, could well be the best use of them, if both available. If the scores were at least level at that point, I think Newcastle could have a really strong finish to the game.

If Isak is absent, then that would mean Anthony Gordon through the middle and allow Harvey Barnes to play on the left.

Along with Barnes, Jacob Murphy impressed at Fulham when coming off the bench, Eddie Howe likes to reward players when he can and I think he’ll expect a big shift from Murphy in front of Trippier today.

Anyway, my take on all of this after the above, my best guesstimate of the Newcastle team v Manchester City…

Pope, Trippier, Schar, Burn, Hall, Joelinton, Bruno, Tonali, Barnes, Gordon, Jacob Murphy

So that would make it three changes from the Fulham match.

Kelly, Willock and Isak dropping out.

With Hall, Jacob Murphy and Tonali coming into the team.
