Our Premier League Awards honour the best – and worst – of the weekend’s top-flight action, featuring a big result in the title race and Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool bombshell.
Do we have a real title race on our hands? Aston Villa have certainly shaken things up this weekend. A last-gasp goal from Emi Buendia sunk leaders Arsenal at Villa Park, in a result that saw Manchester City and Villa close the gap.
Arsenal have largely looked like champions-elect this season, but a disappointing draw at 10-man Chelsea and Saturday’s setback in the Midlands have opened things up.
There are now just three points between the top three, ahead of a gruelling festive period that will see Arsenal and Aston Villa meet again before the New Year celebrations.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was in need of a fresh challenge this summer. A move to Chelsea had failed to work out as hoped, while a reunion with Enzo Maresca did not equate to much more than Europa Conference League outings.
At Everton, he’s flourishing. Safe in the knowledge he’s one of the first names on the team sheet, Dewsbury-Hall is performing to a level that deserves that status. Against Nottingham Forest this weekend, he was everywhere.
Mood.–
He created the opening goal inside two minutes, smashed another effort against the woodwork, and sealed a 3-0 success by driving home a third. Everton are up to sixth, putting recent relegation battles behind them. Dewsbury-Hall’s arrival for a fee in the region of £25m looks brilliant business.
This might just be one of the goals of the season.
A fantastic flowing Fulham move capped by an audacious outside-of-the-boot finish from Harry Wilson. The Welsh winger has a goal catalogue to rival almost anyone.
Leeds vs Liverpool truly had it all. Goals, controversy, mistakes, and some super saves. This big hand from Lucas Perri ensured Leeds earned a result at Elland Road, diving at full stretch to keep out Virgil van Dijk’s goal-bound header.
There have only been 20 occasions of a player scoring directly from a corner in the Premier League.
Welcome to the club, Bruno Guimaraes.
It had to be him, didn’t it?
Unhappy with his recent benching at Liverpool, Mohamed Salah left Leeds as an unused substitute and having dropped a bombshell interview in the mixed zone.
Can his relationship with the Reds, and in particular Arne Slot, be repaired? Or is this set to be a sad end for a genuine Liverpool legend?
What has happened to Ibrahima Konate this season?
Amid a plethora of underperforming players at Liverpool, his fall from grace has perhaps been the most stark. The Frenchman has been a colossal presence for the Reds in recent campaigns, but his performances this season have been littered with errors.
Against Leeds this weekend, he senseless slide on Wilfried Gnonto handed Leeds a lifeline, turning a comfortable win into a chaotic clash and, ultimately, more dropped points for the champions. He’s out of contract in the summer, and the uncertainty around his future may be hindering him. Arne Slot needs to take the defender out of the firing line, but his options are thin.
