The exact date of transfer deadline day is often a topic of discussion, and that’s been particularly true over the last few years.

The general feeling around the game is that the deadline should be before the start of the season, preventing your club from beginning the new campaign with a potential departure still hanging over them.

It would also prevent situations like the one at Arsenal right now, with loanee Neto unable to play in the League Cup for the Gunners because he began the 2024/25 playing for Bournemouth in the same competition.

With that sort of scenario in mind, the Premier League tried to move deadline day to before the start of the season a few years ago. But other top leagues didn’t follow suit, and the decision was made to move back in line with the rest.

That could now be set to change once again. The Times report that Premier League clubs are discussing a plan to close the summer window on August 15th next year.

So what changed? Fabrizio Romano reports that the inciting factor was the Serie A pushing for the window to close earlier this summer.

La Liga decided against the plan, so it ultimately fell through. Serie A clubs didn’t want to be at risk of losing their players to Spain after their deadline had passed.

This time around, the Premier League have joined Serie A in pushing the idea, with the hope that they can reach an agreement with all of the other top European leagues.

The top leagues are in talks to fix the date of the 2025 summer window, and all clubs are reportedly pushing in the same direction.

If they can finally all get on the same page, the move could be a positive one to avoid players becoming cup-tied, and to prevent conflicts of interest like former Gunner Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain playing against Liverpool days before signing for them.

Yet La Liga have consistently been awkward and shut down previous attempts to implement this plan, so it remains to be seen what their clubs do this time.
