Sunday’s Premier League encounter between Chelsea and Liverpool at Stamford Bridge may appear routine on the calendar, but it promises a fair share of drama and symbolism. As Liverpool arrive in West London newly crowned Premier League champions, Chelsea are set to honour them with a guard of honour—an ironic twist considering recent player transfer sagas between the two clubs.
This ceremonial moment marks Chelsea’s first such gesture since 2015, a year in which the roles were reversed. It’s a poignant reflection not only of shifting power dynamics but also of what might have been. Moisés Caicedo and Romeo Lavia—two midfielders who famously rejected Liverpool in favour of Chelsea—will now line up to applaud Wataru Endo, the man Liverpool signed in their place.
Caicedo, who arrived for a British record £115m fee in 2023 after Liverpool had activated his release clause, later remarked: “It was impossible to say no.” Lavia followed soon after, calling his £58m switch a “no-brainer”.
Neither has made the sort of impact that would dull the irony of Sunday’s occasion. Though Caicedo remains suspended for the fixture, both he and Lavia are expected to be present for the guard of honour.

Chelsea may be fifth in the Premier League table with 60 points, but their ambitions are far from settled. The west London club are locked in a fierce contest for European qualification, jostling with Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest for a coveted Champions League place.
Victory over Liverpool would not only boost their chances but also provide psychological reward in a fixture that has become increasingly testy in recent seasons.
Liverpool, already champions under Arne Slot in his maiden campaign, have the luxury of playing with freedom. But don’t mistake that for complacency. With four games remaining, Liverpool could finish on 94 points—a tally that would cement Slot’s first season as one of the finest managerial debuts in Premier League history.
The Dutchman has maintained Liverpool’s intensity and identity, even as he’s ushered in a new era post-Jürgen Klopp.

The Premier League has confirmed the officiating crew for this high-stakes clash. Simon Hooper will oversee proceedings, assisted by Adrian Holmes and Simon Long. Tony Harrington serves as fourth official, while John Brooks heads VAR duties from Stockley Park, supported by Matthew Wilkes.
Hooper’s name will stir memories for Liverpool fans, notably for his involvement in one of the Premier League’s more controversial moments. During a 2-1 loss to Tottenham in the 2023/24 season, Luis Diaz saw a legitimate goal disallowed for offside—a decision later described by PGMOL as a “significant human error”. Miscommunication led VAR to incorrectly assume the goal had been awarded, hence no correction followed.
Curtis Jones also saw red that day following a VAR upgrade, while Diogo Jota was dismissed for two yellow cards. Both decisions fuelled heated debates, with many deeming Jones’ sending-off particularly harsh.
With history between Hooper and Liverpool already written, Sunday’s match carries more than just title-winner pageantry—it holds the potential for more controversy, drama, and reflection on what defines success in modern Premier League football.
