More than three quarters of regular Premier League supporters want VAR scrapped, citing delays and doubts over precision. A new survey also suggests it is harming the live match experience.

According to Le Progres, a Football Supporters' Association poll of nearly 8,000 fans, just over half attending more than 15 home matches a season, found 76% do not support VAR's use. More than 70% disagreed that it has improved overall decision accuracy.

A near consensus of 97% felt football is now less enjoyable, and over 90% said VAR has not enhanced the matchday experience. FSA Premier League network manager Thomas Concannon highlighted frustration at the time taken, perceived lack of accuracy and reduced spontaneity, which many feel dilutes special moments.

Introduced in the Premier League seven years ago, the technology is often criticised as serving TV viewers better than those in stadiums, who are frequently unaware why play is paused. Even so, 94% did not agree that VAR makes football more enjoyable to watch on television.

The Premier League response framed the survey as showing supporters broadly in favour of keeping VAR, while seeking improvements to its use. A rapid rule change appears unlikely, with 19 of 20 clubs choosing to retain it in 2024, Wolves the only side against after proposing the vote. Abolition would require 14 of the 20 clubs to back a fresh motion from a top-flight team.
