Premier League clubs have unanimously voted to keep the £30 cap on away tickets for the next two seasons, helping travelling supporters including those of Sunderland. The decision means the limit, first introduced in 2016, will run through to summer 2028, covering 12 seasons.

The Premier League said away fans are central to the atmosphere at matches and noted that away attendances have risen from 82 per cent to 91 per cent since the cap came in. It also acknowledged the extra costs supporters face when following their teams around the country.

The Football Supporters’ Association welcomed the extension. Chair Tom Greatrex called it great news for travelling fans, credited the Premier League and clubs for keeping the cap in place, and said the policy has saved supporters millions over the past 12 years. He also urged owners to heed supporter groups warning that home prices are often unaffordable.

Separately, Sunderland said this week that a number of tickets for Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at Newcastle United had been returned to sale after what the club described as a large-scale breach of ticket rules. On Tuesday a limited batch was reissued after action against a supporter who misused their allocation.

In total, 65 tickets were released back to market for the St James’ Park clash and have since been resold. The club said it cancelled tickets purchased by a supporter found to be in breach of its away ticketing policies.
