Pedri and Frenkie de Jong are rightfully earning massive praise for their performance last night in Barcelona’s 2-1 win over Newcastle United in the UEFA Champions League, for the game would have been very different without them around.
The duo, starting as the double-pivot, showed the world why they are the sport’s most technically gifted players in their position as they soaked in the hosts’ rough press and came out unscathed time and time again to help Barcelona retain possession.
Pedri, in particular, stole the show with his press resistance, ability to dictate play, and progress the ball forward, and was the major highlight in Barcelona’s dance to the full-time whistle after Newcastle’s seemingly hope-injecting goal in the 90th minute.
The reaction to Pedri’s performance from across England was something special last night, for it appeared that the players and pundits in the Premier League took notice of his talent for the first time and could not get enough.
Taking to his social media after the game, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes did not hold back and showered praise on the Spanish youngster for his quality.

“Pedri is my new favourite player,” he wrote.
Also joining the party was Arsenal and Barcelona legend Thierry Henry, who compared him to one of football’s all-time greats in his position.
“He is the player who most resembles Laudrup.”
Joining the aforementioned legends in showering praise on the 22-year-old was former Manchester City star Jack Grealish, who lauded Pedri and Frenkie de Jong for their masterclass.
“Pedri and De Jong are a pleasure to watch play,” he wrote.
