Premier League panel rules Leeds United should have had penalty in Sunderland defeat | OneFootball

According to the BBC, the Premier League’s Key Match Incident panel has unanimously ruled Leeds United should have received a penalty against Sunderland for Luke O’Nien’s foul on Pascal Struijk during the 1-0 home defeat this month.

In the 16th minute Struijk was pulled down by O’Nien, but referee Stuart Attwell took no action. The panel later assessed that O’Nien was not looking at the ball, had his arms around Struijk’s neck in a non-football action, and impeded the Leeds attacker.

After the match Daniel Farke criticised what he described as crazy decisions, saying Leeds ought to have been given a first-half penalty for the incident involving Struijk.

Farke did not challenge the handball award against Ethan Ampadu, which led to Habib Diarra converting from the spot in the 70th minute.

The panel was also unanimous that this decision was correct, judging that Ampadu moved his arm to divert the ball and that the VAR intervention was rightly upheld.
