According to Sunderland Echo, the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents panel has ruled that Brian Brobbey should have been sent off during Sunderland’s 1-0 win over Tottenham at the Stadium of Light.

The flashpoint came midway through the second half on 12 April, shortly after Nordi Mukiele had put Sunderland ahead. As Tottenham looked to manage a ball down the middle, Kristian Romero positioned himself between Brobbey and goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.

Brobbey then contacted Romero from behind, causing the defender to collide with Kinsky. Referee Rob Jones awarded a foul but declined to show a second yellow to Brobbey, who had been cautioned in the first half after an exchange with Pedro Porro.

On review, the panel delivered a split verdict, three to two, that the on-field decision was incorrect. It deemed the contact a two-handed push that met the threshold for a second caution.

Had Brobbey been dismissed, Tottenham would have enjoyed a numerical advantage for the closing stages of a game they lost 1-0. After the match, Brobbey was subjected to racist abuse on social media, which Sunderland reported to the Premier League, the platforms and the police.

The ruling adds to a series of second-yellow errors associated with Jones this season. Panel data records five incorrect calls involving him in this campaign, all judged to have warranted a dismissal.
