Lutsharel Geertruida’s late Netherlands call-up has taken Sunderland’s contingent for this summer’s FIFA World Cup to 12, level with Crystal Palace and behind only Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United.
According to Sunderland Echo, the on-loan defender was drafted in on Monday evening after Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber failed to recover from a groin injury. Timber featured as Mikel Arteta’s side lost a Champions League final on penalties to Paris Saint-Germain, but he has not made the finals.
Sunderland said on Wednesday they remain in discussions with Geertruida as his loan expires. As it stands, he will return to RB Leipzig at the end of the month, although a Wearside return cannot be ruled out.
For now, Geertruida links up with Brian Brobbey and Robin Roefs in the Netherlands squad.
City lead the way with 19 players, followed by Arsenal on 15 and United on 13. Sunderland are matched by Crystal Palace. Liverpool and Chelsea have 11, Aston Villa 10, Tottenham 9, Brighton 8, Newcastle, Fulham and Wolves 7, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest 6, West Ham and Burnley 5, and Everton, Leeds and Brentford 4.
