Birmingham City host Portsmouth at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park this Saturday for the EFL Championship.
The Blues come into the game in 15th place with 15 points, following a narrow 1-0 defeat at Bristol City. Chris Davies’ side will be eager to return to winning ways on home turf and climb further up the table.
Portsmouth, meanwhile, sit 18th with 13 points after a 1-0 loss to Stoke City. John Mousinho’s men will be hoping to arrest their slide and make life difficult for the hosts in the Midlands.
The last meeting between the two ended in a comprehensive 3-0 victory for Portsmouth, giving Birmingham extra incentive to turn the tables this weekend.
George Revell (Blues Focus): Birmingham City’s 29-match, 556-day unbeaten home league run came to an end the last time they stepped out at St. Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park and Chris Davies’ side will look to release their frustrations when Portsmouth visit on Saturday afternoon.
Blues would have taken six points from three tough games in the space of a week had they beaten Hull, but that bitter defeat was softened three days later with a surprise win at Preston.
A section of Blues’ fanbase thought they had begun to turn a corner after their midweek triumph at Deepdale but that was soon dismissed when they left Ashton Gate empty-handed - and crucially without having registered a single shot on target.
The point I’m making is that Blues are, if anything, consistently inconsistent at the moment. A loss can straightaway be followed up with a win - and that’s what they’re going to have to do if they want to beat Pompey.
Blues do tend to create more at home, but I can’t see it being a very high-scoring affair even if they are to come out on top.
If we’re being truthful, all roads lead to a rubbish game of football but it’s one that Blues desperately need to win.
Prediction: 1-0
Freddie Webb (Pompey News Now / PO4cast): Tireless effort didn’t stop the Blues losing 1-0 at home to Stoke City. Hayden Matthews throwing away a solid performance at centre-back left fans questioning what might have been, and it was a similar story in front of goal.
Young Makenzie Kirk impressed with his endeavour and had some excellent chances, having a header well saved by Viktor Johansson and later making an excellent run into the six yard box, only to be denied by the Swedish stopper.
A silver lining was the return of Josh Murphy, who’s 20 minute cameo from the bench showed all the creativity and flair Pompey have been missing. Struggling for goals and lacking cohesion in the final third, The Blues face a much-fancied Birmingham City side which is in a similar situation.
The only difference is the millions of pounds invested in transfer fees and wages, eclipsing Portsmouth’s budget. With both teams not being sharp going forward, I expect it to be a cagey affair.
Prediction: 1-1
