A trip to Molineux awaits for fourth tier Shrewsbury Town, who will look to pull off an unlikely giant-killing against Premier League strugglers Wolves in the third round of the FA Cup.
After a tough start to the Premier League season which saw them collect just two points by Christmas, Wolves have turned a corner and are unbeaten in their last three games, having taken points off Man United, Everton and West Ham, thrashing the Hammers 3-0 at Molineux last week. One of the few bright sparks for Wolves this season has come in the form of Mateus Mane. The 18-year old has been unstoppable in recent weeks having scored in his last two games.
Wolves have a storied history in the FA Cup and have won the competition four times having reached the final on eight occasions. Their recent history is favourable too; they’ve reached both the quarter-finals and semi-finals in recent years losing to Coventry City and Watford respectively. Their last venture in the cup wasn’t as successful however. Wolves bowed out in last season’s iteration of the cup thanks to a loss on penalties against Bournemouth in the fifth round.
Wolves face League Two side Shrewsbury Town who have had a similarly poor season down in the fourth tier, albeit their situation seems much more salvageable. Sitting 22nd after over half the season played, Shrewsbury haven’t won a game in the league in eight matches dating back to the 15th of November. That win accounts for just one of the four victories they’ve seen all season, 24 games in. It’s been a series of failures in Shropshire as it wasn’t that long ago that Shrewsbury were fighting to gain promotion to the Championship, they have since finished 18th and 23rd in the third tier and now sit uncomfortably close to dropping out of the football league all together.
Shrewsbury haven’t had much luck in the FA Cup throughout their history. They haven’t progressed past the fourth round since 2015/16 where they lost to Manchester United. Ironically, the furthest the Shrews have ever gotten in this competition was the quarter-finals in 1978/79 where they lost to…Wolves.
The match will kick off at 12:15 GMT and will be broadcast on TNT Sports and Discovery+ in the UK.
