The Coatbridge club has been the focus of several takeover bids in recent years, led by Paul Reilly, with the plans attracting significant debate among supporters.
Earlier suggestions to rename the team “Shamrock Rovers Coatbridge” have since been abandoned, though reports indicate there are still intentions to alter the club’s kit to reflect Celtic’s iconic green and white hoops.
While Coatbridge has long been regarded as a stronghold for Celtic supporters, concerns are mounting that such changes could threaten the club’s 144-year history and identity.
Greenrock Cronus Capital Partners – the group behind the proposed takeover – said in a statement to Lanarkshire Live: “Greenrock has been a patient and committed investor in Albion Rovers since its initial acquisition of shares.
“Since then, it has concluded a number of further acquisitions from existing shareholders, each completed on commercially agreed terms. It has done so because it believes, profoundly, in the future of this football club – its community, its history, and its capacity for genuine renewal.
“We can confirm that our shareholding does not include any shares held by Mr Anton Fagan [the club’s largest single shareholder]. We do not require his shares to achieve our objectives for the Club.

“Albion Rovers needs capital. That is not a statement of opinion — it is a financial reality that anyone who has attended Cliftonhill in recent years, or reviewed the Club’s publicly available accounts, will recognise immediately.
“The ground requires investment. The playing squad requires investment. The Club’s infrastructure requires investment.
“Greenrock did not invest in Albion Rovers for a return measured in months or in boardroom politics. We invested because this Club matters — to Coatbridge, to Scottish football, and to the community.
“We are asking every shareholder who shares that view to vote with us, invest alongside us, and be part of what comes next. This is a rescue mission, backed by capital, and offered to every shareholder on equal terms.”

The latest statement makes no reference to the group’s earlier ambition of “tapping into the town’s Irish heritage,” though that issue continues to be at the centre of concerns surrounding the proposed takeover.
It marks the third update issued by the consortium in recent weeks, while club representatives still point to Greenrock’s relatively small stake of just one per cent.
Attention now turns to whether the group has the resources and backing required to significantly increase its shareholding and exert meaningful influence over the future direction of the club.
What do the Celtic supporters from Coatbridge think about this situation at Albion Rovers and the plans for some sort of Celtic-themed takeover?
