Liverpool may not be in the driver’s seat in their UEFA Champions League tie or in the Premier League according to one former player.

On talkSPORT on Friday, former Arsenal and French defender Bacary Sagna provided a hot-take about PSG’s chances to come back in their Champions League tie against Liverpool and whether or not Arne Slot’s men have indeed secured up the Premier League.

“I believe PSG have a good chance of going through to the next Champions League stage. At the minute, Liverpool are flying, of course, because of the results that they’re having, but you never know,” Sagna said.

Liverpool won the opening leg at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday, thanks in large part to the goalkeeping of Alisson (32), who stopped all nine shots that he faced in the match where most believe the Premier League leaders were thoroughly outplayed.

Last season, Les Parisiens lost the opening leg of their quarter-final tie with Barcelona at home (3-2) but advanced by winning the reverse fixture at the Camp Nou 4-1.

Not only is Sagna unconvinced that Liverpool can close the deal with PSG next week at Anfield, but the former Coupe de France champion at AJ Auxerre doesn’t think the Premier League title race is over either.

“It’s going to be difficult to catch Liverpool, but when I look at the game they played against Paris Saint-Germain, I’m thinking maybe sometimes they’re going to have times where they don’t perform so well, as it was the other night.”

Sagna’s former team do have a game in hand on Liverpool, a side that is also in the final of the Carabao Cup later this month.

Since a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in September, Liverpool are unbeaten at Anfield in the English top flight. They have won all four of their Champions League contests at home this season by a combined margin of 10-1, with only Lille OSC scoring against them.

PSG have never won a match at Anfield, losing 2-0 in the second leg of their semi-final Cup Winners’ Cup tie against them in 1997. However, they still advanced by winning leg one 3-0.

Their last Champions League triumph on English soil came in 2020 at Old Trafford, defeating Manchester United 3-1 in group play thanks to a brace from Neymar and a goal from current captain Marquinhos (30).
