PSG Linked With Struggling Real Madrid Star; Should They Make a Move?

Eduardo Camavinga was once one of the brightest young stars in Ligue 1. His impressive performances for Stade Rennais ultimately led to a dream transfer to Real Madrid in 2021, but recent struggles could see him return to the French league.

Real Madrid’s 2-1 defeat to Mallorca this weekend all but confirmed that Los Blancos will not win La Liga this season. For a club the size of Real Madrid, this is an unacceptable development, and many expect big changes this summer. One of those changes, according to Marca, could be Camavinga leaving the club despite having a contract that runs until 2029.

Whenever a player of Camavinga’s quality becomes available, PSG will undoubtedly be linked with them. After the loss to Mallorca, Camavinga was singled out for his poor play, and as AS reports, PSG is monitoring the situation between the 23-year-old midfielder and Real Madrid.

It’s true that Camavinga has struggled at times this season, and Real Madrid will likely make a series of big changes to improve their squad. We also know that, back in 2021, PSG reportedly showed interest in signing him while he was at Rennes. The question now is: Should PSG make a move to sign Camavinga?

PSG’s midfield is already stacked with Vitinha, João Neves, and Fabian Ruiz. While Ruiz has missed significant time this season, Warren Zaïre-Emery has stepped in and performed exceptionally well. In terms of depth, PSG also has Dro Fernández, who arrived in January from FC Barcelona and is looking to play more minutes. PSG doesn’t have a pressing need in midfield, and paying a transfer fee of €50 million or more seems to be bad business.

However, Camavinga is a versatile player, capable of slotting into the midfield and even at full-back. Luis Enrique does prefer players who can fill in at multiple positions, like the aforementioned Zaïre-Emery and Lucas Beraldo, who has recently moved from center-back to defensive midfielder.

The most recent update tends to lean toward Camavinga leaving Real Madrid for a team in the Premier League (AS via Madrid Xtra), and that seems more realistic. Unfortunately for Camavinga, if he really wanted to play for PSG, he had his opportunity in 2021 and chose not to. Now, he’ll have to decide if it makes sense to stay at Real Madrid and improve his play, or perhaps go to the Premier League for a new challenge.
