Gunners manager Mikel Arteta admires the Argentine forward, currently at Atletico Madrid, and wants to bring him to the Emirates Stadium club.
Alvarez has emerged as a primary target for PSG boss Luis Enrique, who sees the 26-year-old as the ideal centrepiece for his fluid and versatile attacking system at Parc des Princes.
While Arteta has identified Alvarez as the marquee signing needed to elevate the Gunners’ frontline at the North London club, PSG’s financial firepower gives the French champions a clear advantage in any potential bidding war.
Arsenal’s interest is well-documented, but Atletico Madrid are maintaining a firm not-for-sale stance, with manager Diego Simeone labelling the forward ‘untouchable’.
However, with Antoine Griezmann expected to depart this summer, the Spanish giants may be forced to reconsider their position if a substantial bid is tabled.
Alvarez remains one of Europe’s most productive attackers, having tallied 20 goals and 10 assists in 52 appearances across all competitions this season.
For PSG, meeting a valuation in excess of €100m is a manageable hurdle as they look to refresh their squad and signal intent for the new campaign.
For Arsenal, the challenge lies in presenting a persuasive sporting project that can outweigh both the financial and lifestyle appeal of Paris, as well as the comfort Alvarez currently enjoys at Atletico.
Alongside Paris Saint-Germain and the Gunners, La Liga giants Barcelona are also admirers of Alvarez, although their financial situation makes a move for the Argentine unlikely at this stage.
Despite that, the presence of multiple European heavyweights in the chase only adds further intrigue to what promises to be one of the summer’s most high-profile transfer battles.
