Former Chelsea player Scott Minto believes Cole Palmer should have been named Premier League Player of the Year and was unlucky to miss out to Phil Foden.

Palmer has been nothing short of a revelation since swapping the Etihad for Stamford Bridge last summer and has lit up the Premier League.

The 22-year-old quickly established himself as Chelsea’s go to man and was named Premier League Young Player of the Year after scoring 22 goals and providing 11 assists to finish with the most goal contributions in the league.

Minto feels Palmer should have won Player of the Year

Palmer’s form saw him become a full England international and he made a big impact for the Three Lions in the knockout stages of Euro 2024, scoring the equaliser in the final against Spain.

The former City man took home numerous awards for his incredible season, his first playing regular Premier League football and has also been nominated for the Ballon d’Or.

Despite the attacking talent Chelsea have and the signings of Pedro Neto, Joao Felix and Jadon Sancho, it still very much feels like the Blues will be counting on Palmer to make things happen this season.

Palmer already has five goal contributions from the first three Premier League games.

Palmer was also nominated for Premier League Player of the Year but missed out to Foden and former Blue Minto believes he should have won it.

“And this is why Cole Palmer for me was Player of the Season last season. Phil Foden, amazing. Rodri, amazing. Declan Rice, amazing,” he told talkSPORT.

“But to do it in these toxic kind of situations where the shirt weighs so heavy, where the fans have been incredibly patient but are starting to get impatient at what they are seeing because of such an inconsistency, that kid, I am telling you now, was nothing short of sensational last season.”

Palmer has picked up where he left off last season and already has four assists and a goal in the first three Premier League games of the campaign, and seems to be thriving in a more central role under Enzo Maresca.

Chelsea will be hoping he’s fit for Saturday’s game against Bournemouth after he withdrew from the England squad due to muscle fatigue.
