Under FIFA rules, red cards in international friendlies are generally not carried into the World Cup, a point relevant to Rafael Leao and Nicolas Jackson after recent dismissals.

Rafael Leao was sent off following a brawl against Chile, and Nicolas Jackson received two yellow cards versus Saudi Arabia, with the World Cup beginning this Thursday from 11 June to 19 July. According to L'Équipe, Article 69 of the FIFA disciplinary code sets out this principle.

Instead, any ban must be served in the next friendly for the player's national team.

If the punishment is time based, for example a three month suspension, the player is barred from all football activity, official or friendly, for that period.

In cases of serious misconduct, including discrimination, match manipulation, assaulting a match official or falsification, FIFA can extend the sanction worldwide, meaning it would then apply in official competitions.
