Rafael Marquez will take over as Mexico head coach after the 2026 World Cup, said Duilio Davino, the federation’s director of national teams.

“Son contrat est signé”, Davino said, speaking to Fox Sports in an interview with former Chile international Fabian Estay. He added: “En tant qu’adjoint, en tant qu’entraîneur, il est comme il était comme joueur: il se métamorphose dans le vestiaire”.

Marquez has been an assistant since Javier Aguirre took charge in July 2024. Aguirre will lead the side through the North American tournament, which runs from 11 June to 19 July.

Marquez’s immediate target will be to guide the national team to the 2030 World Cup.

As a player, the former Monaco and Barcelona defender won the Champions League in 2006 and 2009 and four La Liga titles with Barça. He also lifted Ligue 1 with Monaco in 2000, the Confederations Cup with Mexico in 1999, two Gold Cups in 2003 and 2011, and finished Copa América runner-up in 2001.

The fourth most-capped Mexico player with 147 caps, he appeared at five World Cups from 2002 to 2018, captaining four. He later became sporting director at Atlas Guadalajara, then coached the youth of Real Sociedad Deportiva Alcala in Spain and Barcelona Atletic from 2022 to 2024.
