If the exclusive transfer update from DaveOCKop is believed to be true, Rangers are eyeing a permanent move for Owen Beck. But they are not alone in the race, with a host of English Championship outfits, including Derby County and Wrexham, also keeping close eyes on the £10m-rated Liverpool left fullback.

Born in Wrexham, the 22-year-old Wales youth international progressed through the academy ranks of Flint Town United, Tranmere Rovers and Stoke City before being roped in by the Merseysiders. He represented them at various youth levels and eventually made a couple of League Cup appearances in the 2021-22 season.

How He Has Grown Into Senior Football

Although the club arranged a loan with Portuguese outfit Famalicão, he was recalled in less than two months in favour of a temporary switch to League One side Bolton Wanderers.

He struggled for minutes with the Trotters, but the 2023-24 proved to be a breakthrough campaign for the youngster when he exhibited his mastery in Dundee colours. A loan last year at Blackburn saw him flourish in the English game until a hamstring injury ended his season prematurely.

But he remains in the books of a host of outfits, and the Gers, under new boss Russell Martin, are going through a reconstruction across the pitch. The backline, in particular, has been revamped with the signings of Nasser Djiga, Manny Fernandez and Max Aarons. The latter has been roped in on a season-long loan from Bournemouth, and despite his ability to slot in both the fullback roles, the gaffer must deploy him from the right to replace James Tavernier with time.

Why Rangers Are After A New Left-back

On paper, Rangers still have two left-backs in Jefte and Ridvan Yilmaz. But the latter is expected to return to Turkey, having failed to settle in Glasgow due to form and fitness woes. Martin has omitted him from their squad to face Panathinaikos in the Champions League second qualifying round, and his exit should provide an avenue for a new arrival.

Liverpool already had Andrew Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas down the left. Moreover, they added Milos Kerkez earlier this window, thus pushing Beck further down the pecking order. While the asking fee might be too high to meet for the Light Blues, the cash injection from Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers, as well as a few high-profile departures, should allow them to invest in top targets before the window is slammed shut.

Rangers must propose add-ons and sell-on clauses to match the demanded figure, given their longstanding interest in the Welshman. Known for his flair, finesse and the right balance between attack and defence, the highly-rated Liverpool prospect would be a massive coup if the Gers pull it off in due time.
