Rangers Fans Warned Their Anger Is Aimed at the Wrong Target

Many Rangers fans will know the name Bill McMurdo Jr. He is a well-known Rangers writer over the years, son of the famous football agent and his namesake back in the day. McMurdo Jr. is a very well thought of writer and blogger in the Rangers community, although he has taken a little bit of a backseat in more recent times. Rangers fans anger is real.

Relating

He was heavily opposed back in the day by many of his viewers, but Ibrox Noise was very much frequently on Bill’s side with so many of the things he said, and many Rangers fans were too, even if the majority would frequently speak against him. Ibrox Noise can relate to that only too well.

However, a recent post that Bill made definitely gained some attention, and has even received a little bit of attraction from the clickbait Rangers sites too. It was his contention that while the fury at Russell Martin from fans was understandable, it was misplaced ire. The real problem is the owners:

“Just to make my position clear. My issues are ultimately going to be with the owners. If Thelwell, Stewart and Martin are not up to the job, that’s on the custodians. There’s no point in hating on these guys for being duds if the people who appointed them and oversee them decide to keep them in situ.Directing your ire at executives becomes increasingly irrational if the people who can remove them choose not to.In terms of the footballing side, which is the priority for supporters, it is vital to back the team in times of adversity. Getting all chewed up by hatred for the manager serves no-one. Managers come and go, as do players and people behind the scenes. At football clubs as in other businesses, the buck stops with the owners.”

Anyone criticising Russell Martin directly and demanding he be fired perhaps is slightly missing the point, and we can see the relevance of this issue here. The point is that the owners are the ones who have made the call to keep Martin. Patrick Stewart, CEO, cannot necessarily fire Martin without authorisation and permission from those above him. It’s the same for Kevin Thelwell. He has no authority here either.

Puppetmasters

While none of us like any of the three of them for the simple reason that they epitomise everything that is wrong with Rangers at the moment, the paymasters above them, the puppetmasters above them, are the borderline unpronounceable Paraag Marathe, and of course Andrew Cavanagh. They hold all the strings.

They are the ones who make the call. The ones who have to be protested against. They are the ones making the decisions. They are the ones who make the final judgement.

Ire

Consequently, fans’ ire at Martin might be understandable, but it’s not really going to help. Rangers fans have to direct their ire directly at the owners. They are the ones who hold the key. They are the ones who endorse this manager.

So if any Rangers fans have fury over Russell Martin, and believe us, there are many, as Bill said, aim your anger at the owners, not those that they employ.
