Rangers’ summer transfer activity continues to generate interest as the club explores various options to strengthen the squad. While there is a lot of speculation flying around right now about potential signings and exits, some names are cropping up that have certainly raised a few eyebrows. One such name is £300,000-rated Emmanuel Fernandez of Peterborough United. The story itself is still developing and fans remain unsure about the direction the club is taking this window but it does underline that the recruitment department is clearly keeping tabs on multiple levels of English football.
Fernandez, a left-sided central defender, has become the latest name linked with a move to Ibrox and while he is not a household name among Rangers supporters, there is something intriguing about this particular interest. It comes not long after Peterborough’s Kwame Poku opted for a move to QPR over Rangers, a decision which many felt may have ended any business between the two clubs. However that clearly is not the case, as the Light Blues seem willing to go back in for another of Darren Ferguson’s squad.
Rangers clearout starts as six Ibrox players leave has already begun and it is becoming increasingly obvious that the club is targeting long-term depth with this next round of incomings. The move for Fernandez would be in keeping with that policy. At 22 years old with potential still to be unlocked, he represents the kind of prospect Rangers have occasionally sought in the past and either developed or moved on. Did Patrick Stewart sell Rangers fans a big transfer dummy? raised questions about where the ambition lies right now but clearly the scouting team sees something in Fernandez that could be worth nurturing.
There’s a bit of a catch with Rangers’ new signing might as well apply again here because there will be concerns among some fans about the lack of top-level experience the defender brings. Still, Rangers do not appear to be the only ones monitoring the centre-back with several Championship sides having made tentative enquiries too. Whether this one progresses beyond early talks is unclear but the story is worth following.
